In March, the United States Rugby Foundation selected a new governor to oversee the group's efforts in Tennessee. The man they selected certainly seems cut out for the job.

Brian Silkwood has been involved with Tennessee's rugby landscape since he played for the University of Tennessee 25 years ago. Now, he continues his passion with his new role to expand rugby's influence in the state.

"Being part of the US Rugby Foundation gives one a chance to bring meaningful change and progress to the game of rugby in the United States," said US Rugby Foundation Director David Bruck in a press release. "Let's give our kids the same opportunities to play rugby as in Commonwealth countries, and make rugby a mainstream sport in the United States for girls and boys."

The State Governors will work on a regional level to help build rugby on the grassroots level. Governors help cultivate relationships within rugby communities, find donors within their region, support youth rugby efforts within communities, and support other efforts to help the game. The State Governor plan helps localize efforts with a national organization still overseeing support efforts.

Silkwood has quite the resume to back up his new role. Per the US Rugby Foundation, some of his career highlights include:

-All Southeastern Conference (2x) while playing at the University of Tennessee

-Part of founding group that brought high school rugby to Knoxville

-Played for the Knoxville Possums & Nashville Rugby Football Club

-Founding member of Sumner Rugby Football Club

-Spearheaded development of the Hendersonville Sports Complex that has two full-size rugby pitches

-Awarded the Honor the Game “James Wharton” Award from Hendersonville Parks & Recreation

Silkwood joins seven other new governors appointed by the foundation:

Kevin Flynn, Washington

Daryl Jackson, Colorado

Sarah Kaler, Missouri

Filip Keuppens, Texas

Kurt Mockenhaupt, Virginia

Kevin Phillipson, Oklahoma

James Wolfinger, Texas

Along with Silkwood, these seven new leaders look to grow the game and make a difference in lives of youth in their respective states.

We look forward to seeing Silkwood’s efforts in Tennessee.
