Ravenwood Raptors Sweep Tennessee State Championships

The Boys team win the 7s title while the Girls team win the 15s title

Sweeps are rare in the playoffs. Teams who win state championships in the same sport for both genders is even harder to do. Yet, on May 14, the Ravenwood Raptors did just that in the Tennessee state rugby championships.

The Lady Raptors stunned the #1 team in the state, the Columbia Central High Lady Lions, to win another state title. With this victory, the Lady Raptors continue their recent dominant streak. The team had won both the 15s and 7s state championships the prior school year.

The loss for Columbia was their first of the season.

On the boy's side, the Raptors were fighting a tight match with Germantown. After a back-and-forth battle, the sides were tied at 27 a piece with the 80 minute mark approaching.

Stone Wilkinson, the senior flyhalf and University of Tennessee recruit, was not going to let his final high school match end in a loss. With his quick play, he scored the final try as time expired to lead the Raptors to a 32-27 victory. The team had won the state championship in a matter of moments.

Mike McWilliams scored three tries and Bryce Appleton added one for the Raptors during the match.

With the end of the spring high school rugby season, Tennessee schools look to retool and prepare for the Fall. The question is, will the Raptors be dethroned or continue their sweep in Spring 2023?

Only time will tell.
