Ashanti Chumbley has signed to play collegiate rugby at Newberry College.

"Newberry Women's Rugby is excited to announce the signing of Ashanti Chumbley for Fall 2022!" the team said in a Facebook post. "She brings a variety of skills from her multi-sport background in soccer, track, wrestling, and rugby. Welcome to the Wolf Pack Ashanti!"

While in high school, Chumbley was a star for the Inner City Rugby of Nashville (ICRON) program where she was part of the 2021 Tennessee State Championship team, launched the Sumner County Rugby girls' program, and played for the Panther Rugby Academy, a high-performance/elite rugby program developing athletes in the USA Rugby National Development pathway.

"Congratulations Ashanti and her parents Shannon and Trudy Chumbley," ICRON said in a Facebook post. "Ashanti has taken full advantage of the Nashville area rugby community...Ashanti's coaches commend her strong character, team first attitude, and positive team leadership."

Chumbley will be an important piece to Newberry College's team. After getting approval from the Newberry College Board of Trustees, the team will play its first games ever in the Fall 2022 season with other NCAA Division II schools. Just like her instrumental help in building youth programs, Chumbley will be a leader in solidifying Newberry as a rugby powerhouse.

MLR Tennessee looks forward to seeing Chumbley's success in college.
